My needs

I required an EDC (every day carry) torch that was compact, lightweight and reliable. While this could be carried on a key chain, I chose to carry it in the nylon pouch of my Leatherman. I would recommend this torch to anyone who needs access to a compact, dependable torch wherever they go.

 

 

 

What I like

The Fenix LD01 is a great general purpose torch which ticks most of the boxes for EDC:

• Compact – torch is small enough to carry in the pouch of my  Leatherman Charge TTi
• Lightweight – I hardly notice carrying it
• Flexible – three different light levels (medium, low then high) and can be stood on end like a candle
• Easy operation twist switch – turned on by rotating the head, so no turning it on accidentally by bumping a switch
• Reliable – works when I need it (so many other cheap torches have broken or accidentally switched on and discharged the batteries)
• Powered by single NiMH AAA battery:
  • Cheap, easy to source, always lots of spares available at home
  • Easy to charge – individually if required with the Universal NiCd/NiMH Battery Charger (Activ Energy), or as a set in the Guide 10 Plus solar charger (Goal Zero) when camping
  • Long lasting – 750mAh NiMH lasts 27 hours on low setting, or nearly 1.5 hours on high setting
• Waterproof – this has been underwater in rivers while fishing and at the beach, although I do give it a good rinse and dry afterwards just to be safe
• Simple – nothing fancy to go wrong
• Tough – “durable aircraft-grade” aluminium so must be good!
• Quality – makes a useful gift, and can be engraved

Limitations

The only limitation I found is that the maximum output is 72 lumens which is good for about 50 metres – anything further requires a more powerful torch.

Maintenance

This torch is very simple to maintain:

• Lubricate the rubber O-ring with petroleum jelly after cleaning or when the twisting action becomes stiff
• Clean the torch (rinse, disassemble, dry and reassemble) when used underwater for more than a few minutes
• Remove AAA battery when not used for extended periods
