My needs
I needed a quick way to check the level of posts, without picking up a hand-held spirit level each time. I use concrete posts, treated pine posts, metal star pickets and steel tubing.
What I like
Quick and easy
The Stanley 47-720 post level attaches to concrete fence posts using an adjustable elastic strap, so you can quickly set the right tension to hold the level on the post. The in-built magnets attach automatically to box tubing and round metal poles.
Clever design / Strong and accurate
The 47-720 post level is well built, made of thick yellow plastic and is quite robust. My previous plastic post levels all snapped, partly due to their rigid right angle structure which doesn’t allow for the inevitable knocks and bumps in the tool box. The Stanley post level folds down for storage, protecting the accuracy of the vials and the plastic structure itself. If you apply too much pressure the two sections unclip, so you can put them back together. [picture]
Clever design
Instead of premoulded rigid structure,
Flexible
My concrete fence posts aren’t true 90 degree angle, and the 47-720 post level is adjustable above 90 degrees which allows both sides to sit snuggly against the two sides of the post being measured. The rigid post levels don’t allow for this.
Star pickets can also be levelled easily by pushing the post level slot onto the star picket [picture].
Metal poles attach via magnets on the post level, e.g. when levelling the strainer beam of a box section [picture].
Summary
The Stanley 47-720 post level is an economical, quality tool that will always remain in my fencing toolbox. It quickly attaches to a variety of post materials and shapes, providing me hands-free and accurate post levelling.
